The historical development of the stock “Haflinger” is a success story which could not be more perfect: Once a stocky mountain horse, which was mainly used as a beast of burden or as a draught horse, the animal with its shock of fair hair has developed into an absolute world breed, to a much sought-after universal horse for families and leisure with positive characteristics like temperament, performance, character, an attractive outward appearance and great resistance.
The breed started with the birth of the stallion 249 Folie from a Tyrolean mountain mare and an Arab stallion in the South Tyrolean Alps in 1874. Since then, all stallions and mares can be put down to this first registered Haflinger stallion. Organized breeding of Haflingers began 1921 with the foundation of the first North-Tyrolean Haflinger Horse Breeding Association. From then on, the Haflinger have been completely registered in the stud books of the Haflinger Horse Breeding Association and must be purely bred from the first stallion. Today, still all 7 bloodlines exist, to which all of the Haflingers worldwide go back.
In his childhood, Edwin Berthold has worked a lot with Haflinger horses on his parents’ farm and learnt the first basic principles of successful breeding from his father. In 1992, the Haflinger breeder enthusiast started his own breeding enterprise in Gargellen.
The biggest breeding success was the rank of winner of the reserve class (2nd place) of our mare “Muscara” at the World Fair in the year 2000.
